India has officially expressed its concern regarding the ban on the Awami League’s activities as a political party in Bangladesh.
On Tuesday evening in Delhi, during a Ministry of External Affairs press briefing, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded to a question on this matter by stating, “The ban on the Awami League without due process is a concerning development.”
He further added, “As a democracy, India is naturally concerned at the curtailment of democratic freedoms and shrinking political space [in Bangladesh].”
At the same time, India reiterated its demand for the earliest possible elections in Bangladesh.
Randhir Jaiswal said, “We strongly support the early holding of free, fair, and inclusive elections in Bangladesh.”
It is noteworthy that since the political transition in Bangladesh last August, India has consistently called for an inclusive election in the country as soon as possible.
