Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal granted bail for 23 days in excise corruption case. That is, if he does not get bail again, he will have to spend the day of Lok Sabha vote counting in jail.
The Supreme Court of India has said that Kejriwal is being granted bail on Friday, May 10. However, it will be valid till June 1. That is, if he does not get bail again, he will have to spend the Lok Sabha vote counting day (June 4) in jail.
Delhi Chief Minister’s lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi pleaded for him to stay out of jail on the day of counting. He requested to extend the bail period till June 5. However, the Supreme Court of India directly said ‘no’ to it.
However, Kejriwal will not be able to perform the duties of Chief Minister even if he gets bail. There was an indication that he might get bail only last Tuesday. At the time, India’s top court had indicated that Kejriwal could be granted interim bail to campaign in the Lok Sabha elections.
Kejriwal is currently in Delhi’s Tihar Jail. He was arrested on March 21 in the Delhi Excise corruption case. Since then he tried to get bail. He also applied for bail in the Delhi High Court. It was dismissed by the Delhi High Court.
It was then that the Chief Minister of Delhi and the main leader of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of India filed a bail application in the Supreme Court. Kejriwal was granted interim bail today in view of that case.
