In the midst of the situation, a hearing is being held in the Supreme Court of Pakistan next Monday (February 19) on an application to cancel and declare the election illegal.
Pakistan’s national and provincial assembly elections were held on February 8. Several parties, including PTI, the party of the country’s jailed leader Imran Khan, have raised allegations of massive rigging in this election. In the election, no party got enough seats to form the government alone. However, the army-backed Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N has started the process of forming the government by bypassing the PTI-backed independent candidates who won the maximum number of seats.
Meanwhile, the post-election situation in Pakistan is gradually taking a new turn with various rumors and incidents including protests by PTI supporters and the defection of the third majority party, PPP.
In the midst of the situation, a hearing is being held in the Supreme Court of Pakistan next Monday (February 19) on an application to cancel and declare the election illegal. A three-member bench will be headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isha in the hearing. The other two members of the bench are Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Musharat Hilali.
Ali Khan, a Pakistani citizen, filed a petition to annul and declare the election null and void, alleging vote rigging and fraud. He also demanded to cancel the election and hold another election within the next 30 days. Along with that, the person also applied for the intervention and monitoring of the judiciary for the smooth conduct and credibility of the new elections.
According to reports, the common citizen’s petition has asked the Election Commission of Pakistan and the central government to be held accountable. Besides, a stay on the formation of the new government has also been sought till the case is settled.
Meanwhile, PTI has called for a protest program across Pakistan tomorrow Saturday (February 17) on the orders of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
