Nine people were killed when Israeli forces attacked a UN shelter in the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis on Wednesday. Many others were injured. It is feared that the number of casualties may increase.
In a post on social media X, United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) – Gaza director Thomas White said, ‘Two tank shells hit a building where 800 people have taken refuge. Nine people were killed. Another 75 people were injured. It is feared that the death toll may increase.
UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini strongly condemned the attack on the Gaza shelter, calling it a “flagrant disregard for the basic rules of war”.
In a post on X, he said, “The compound is clearly identified as a UN facility and its location was shared with the Israeli authorities.” As we do with all our infrastructure.’
Rafah-based UNRWA spokesman Adnan Abu Hasna said no warning was issued by the Israeli army before the attack.
