About 10 civilians, including children, were killed in airstrikes targeting the neighboring towns of Arman and Malh in Sweda province in southeastern Syria. Several houses in the city were reportedly destroyed in the attack.
Syria suspects Jordan of the attack. However, the Jordanian government has not commented on this so far.
Earlier, Jordanian forces carried out several airstrikes against suspected drug smugglers and their facilities in Syria last year. Jordan and its Western allies have always said highly organized and armed Iran-backed militias operating in areas controlled by the Syrian government have been smuggling into neighboring states.
Witnesses said the attack destroyed the homes of two men, Omar Talab and Turki al-Halabi. Talab, his mother and his aunt died in the attack. Seven members of Halabi’s family were also killed, including his wife and two daughters. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least nine people were killed in the attack, including five women and two children, and one was trapped under the rubble.
If Jordan had indeed carried out the attack, it would be the third time this year that the country’s warplanes have violated Syrian territory.
