A journalist and a reporter’s son were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Rafah, bordering the besieged Palestinian Gaza Strip. One of them is Mustafa Thuraya of news agency AFP and the other is Hamza, son of Wael al-Dahdur of Qatar-based media Al Jazeera.
Mustafa worked as a cameraman for AFP. And Hamza was the son of Al Jazeera’s own reporter. On Sunday, they were also going to the scene to collect news of the Israeli attack. But the vehicle carrying them was attacked on the way.
Hamza’s father, Wael al-Dahdur, serves as Al Jazeera’s Gaza bureau chief. Earlier on October 7, two weeks after the war, four members of the family, including Dahdur’s mother, lost their lives in a barbaric attack by Israel. A few days later, his father was also injured in an attack by the occupying forces.
This journalist of Al Jazeera is speechless after losing his son. Despite this, he said with a strong spirit, we will move forward. The world should see what is happening in Gaza, what kind of brutality is going on.
On Sunday (January 7), the Ministry of Health controlled by the armed Hamas ruling group in Gaza confirmed this information. The ministry also said that Israel carried out airstrikes on the vehicle carrying the two journalists in Rafah. Israel declared the area where their vehicles were targeted as a safe corridor. The BBC contacted the Israeli Ministry of Defense (IDF) after the attack. But they had no immediate comment.
Last week, the United States-based journalists’ organization ‘Committee to Protect Journalists’ said that 77 journalists have been killed since the start of the war on October 7 last year until December 31. Among them, 70 Palestinians, four Israelis and three Lebanese journalists.
