Former European Commission President Jacques Delors has died. He died in his sleep at his home in Paris on Wednesday morning. He was 98 years old. This information was given by Martin Aubry, daughter of Delors.
Jacques Delors is considered the architect of the modern European Union (EU). He served as the President of the European Commission from 1985 to 1995. He played a key role in the creation of the single European market by facilitating the free movement of people, goods and services between the countries of the European Union. Apart from this, he also laid the foundations of the single European currency, the Euro.
Delros served three terms as President of the European Commission. No one else has held the position so many times since then. He also served as the French Finance Minister from 1981 to 1984.
Expressing grief over the death of Delros, French President Emmanuel Macron said Delros was a French statesman. He is the ultimate craftsman of Europe. His determination, ideals and integrity will always inspire us. My respect for his work and memory. I am equally saddened by his loved ones.
Ursula von der Leyen, the current president of the European Commission, also mourned the death of Delros, saying that Delros was a dreamer. He strengthened Europe.
European Council President Charles Michel referred to Delros as a great Frenchman and European. Delors will go down in history as one of our European manufacturers, he said.
