Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Surat Diamond Exchange, a trading office for precious diamonds. It occupies the largest office space in the world.
This building in Gujarat’s Surat district has overtaken the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense, to occupy the top spot.
This office has been developed as a single destination for all types of services for around 65 thousand diamond traders in Gujarat. This 15-storey building is built on 35 acres of land. The area of this building is 67 lakh square feet.
Its construction was completed in July this year. A total of Rs 3,200 crore has been spent on it.
In 1943, the Pentagon began operations in the state of Virginia in the United States. It is spread over an area of 65 lakh square feet.
Surat Diamond Bourse Bhavan is considered as the commercial center for the sale of precious diamonds. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it on Saturday.
These will include a state-of-the-art ‘Customs Clearing House’ for import-export, shopping mall for retail jewelery and international banking and safety vault facilities.
It has 4500 offices for domestic and foreign businessmen.
The head of this project, Mahesh Gadhabi, told CNN that the new building will save thousands of people money and time. Many traders had to travel to Mumbai by train almost every day for business, which is no longer necessary.
This building has an entertainment center and parking area covering an area of 20 lakh square feet.
