The Dubai Police organized a dialogue session titled “Criminal Application in the Metaverse” to discuss the security challenges accompanying the rapid development of Metaverse technologies.
The Criminal Control Department of the General Department of Criminal Investigation organised the session per the directives of His Excellency Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, the Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police.
Brigadier Saeed Al Ayali, Deputy Director of the General Department for Criminal Investigation for Administration and Control Affairs, inaugurated the session at the Officer’s Club in Al Jaddaf in the presence of Brigadier Saeed Al Qamzi, Assistant Director of the General Department for Criminal Investigation for Administration Affairs; Colonel Rashid bin Dhaboi, Director of Crime Control, several officers and employees.
The Vision
Brigadier Al Ayali emphasised that the session reflects Dubai Police’s commitment to future foresight and keeping pace with scientific and technological advancements, including the rapidly evolving virtual world of the Metaverse.
“The session, featuring technical experts, discusses the pros and cons of using the Metaverse and how to combat arising crimes, aligning with Dubai Police’s strategic objective to enhance community safety and lead in policing,” he said.
Addressing Challenges
Colonel bin Dhaboi highlighted that the session addresses the swift developments in the Metaverse, discussing security challenges and crime forms in this virtual world. He noted, “While modern technologies have transformed the world into a “small village” enhancing human communication and connection, they could have adverse effects if misused, necessitating intensified police efforts to stay ahead in combatting such issues.”
Colonel bin Dhaboi added that the Metaverse, rich in content that attracts various social segments, is expected to play a significant role in the coming years, requiring proactive policing through dialogue sessions with specialists and strategic partners.
Four Themes
The session included four main themes: the first discussed security challenges and crime forms in the Metaverse, while the second focused on opportunities modern technologies offer police forces to combat and protect the community from crimes involving Metaverse technologies. The third theme addressed the UAE’s regulations and legislations related to Metaverse crimes, and the fourth explored effective ways to disseminate awareness and educational messages about crimes associated with Metaverse technologies.
