At least 15 people have been death and several others are missing after heavy rains triggered a landslide at a gold mine in Indonesia’s West Sumatra province.
Provincial Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Ilham Wahab said the landslide occurred on Thursday evening after heavy rains.
He said that this landslide happened in a gold mine. Several people have been affected by it. Rescue operations are continuing there.
Ilham Wahab said three people were injured in the landslide and 25 people are still missing.
There are many unlicensed mines across the mineral-rich Southeast Asian archipelago. Abandoned sites are where locals pan for gold without proper safety equipment. Ilham could not confirm whether the mine was illegal.
