Former US President Donald Trump has not yet come to power. In the meantime, a massive roundup of illegal immigrants has begun in the United States. Police departments and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in several states, including New York, are raiding cities on suspicion of various irregularities and crimes.
As a result, millions of illegal immigrants in the United States are worried. Various organizations working on immigration rights and human rights are preparing to start a movement.
New York City is no longer safe for illegal immigrants (undocumented). Previously, illegal immigrants would choose New York City as a sanctuary city after entering the United States through any border. But more illegal immigrants now live in New York than capacity. As a result, New York City is in trouble with illegal immigrants.
A law was passed by the New York City Council in 2014 to protect illegal immigrants, said a senior official at an organization working on immigration rights and human rights, speaking on condition of anonymity. Because of that law, the New York Police Department could not ask anyone’s immigration status. Even Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were not obligated to provide any information.
This law is still in force. However, New York police can tell Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to deport illegal immigrants if they want to.
A senior Immigration and Customs Enforcement official says New York City’s laws and policies are conflicting when it comes to deporting illegal immigrants. The official recently cited the violent beating of two NYPD police officers in New York City’s Times Square, saying illegal immigrants are using this opportunity of the law badly.
As incidents of migrant crime received widespread media coverage, pressure on the mayor mounted. As a result, the mayor announced the deportation. The mayor’s announcement was welcomed by Republican members of the New York City Council, Republican Congresswoman Nicole Maliotakis, and other Republicans.
Meanwhile, when asylum-seekers crossing the Mexican border were bussed from Texas to New York City, Mayor Eric Adams arranged for them to stay, even though they were struggling financially.
When all the shelters in New York City were full, Summer gave them room in the school cafeteria. He then arranged for them to stay in tents at Randall Island Park and an abandoned air base in Brooklyn. They are paid by hand. Request the federal government to issue work authorization. The migration issue puts Mayor Adams in deep trouble.
Soon asylum seekers were seen fighting, stabbing each other in the shelters. They are not stopping the police from torturing them on the streets. Many people who are caught in theft and robbery cases are found to be newly arrived migrants. These migrants from various South American countries had no idea how smart the New York City police were. They were all caught.
When Mayor Eric Adams was asked about this at a press conference, he said, “Not all migrants are bad.” These are just a few. It is not fair to blame all for a few. But on Tuesday, February 27, the mayor announced that even though New York City is a sanctuary, federal immigration agents can arrest and deport migrants who commit crimes.
Migrants will not need to prove their crimes. If the police find them suspicious, they will arrest them and hand them over to the immigration agents.
Meanwhile, after Mayor Eric Adams’ announcement, City Council Speaker Adrian Adams made it clear that changing the sanctuary law would require the cooperation of the City Council. There are currently no plans to change this law.
