South Africa has applied to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for urgent action against Israel, accusing it of genocide in the besieged Palestinian Gaza. The judgment of that case will be announced today.
The 17-member panel of judges at the International Court of Justice will announce their decision on Friday (January 26). The hearing is scheduled to begin in The Hague, Netherlands; It will last about an hour.
However, the International Court of Justice will not make a decision today on the main allegation against Israel in the South African case, that is, whether genocide took place in Gaza or not. For now, attention is focused on South Africa’s request for emergency intervention to end the conflict in Gaza.
According to Gaza health authorities, the Israeli offensive over the past two months has destroyed most of the habitable areas in the besieged Gaza Strip and killed around 26,000 innocent Palestinians.
Israel demanded that the case be dismissed directly from the International Court of Justice. A spokesman for the Israeli government said last Thursday that they hope the UN High Court will throw out these “false” accusations.
Meanwhile, the barbaric Israeli aggression in Gaza has not stopped yet. In the last 24 hours, more than 24 attacks have been carried out by the occupying Israeli forces in the besieged valley. More than 200 Palestinians were killed and at least 370 were injured. “Many people are still trapped under the rubble and in the streets, and rescuers are unable to reach them,” Gaza’s health ministry said.
The ministry said in a statement that since October 7 last year, the number of Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip has exceeded 25,900. So far 64 thousand 110 people have been injured in this barbaric attack.
UN agencies say that 60 percent of the infrastructure of the already besieged territory has been damaged or destroyed by Israel’s indiscriminate attacks, and about 85 percent of its residents have been displaced.
