Pakistan’s national elections were just over a month away. But a resolution has already been passed in the country’s parliament to postpone the election.
The resolution was passed on Friday (January 5). The resolution called for delaying the national elections.
As a result, elections are not being held in the country on February 8. A resolution was passed to postpone the election citing security reasons.
However, the proposal was opposed by Pakistan’s Caretaker Government Information Minister Mortuza Salangi and Pakistan Muslim League-N Senator Afnan Ullah Khan. Later the resolution was passed in the presence of only 14 legislators.
Senator Afnanullah Khan said, the security situation of the country is not really good. But the situation was worse in 2008 and 2013, yet elections were held.
He said, will you delay the election on the pretext of weather and security? Earlier, general elections were held twice in February.
Afnanullah raised the question, whether Pakistan, a country of 240 million people, can continue without a constitutional institution, do you want it through this proposal? Don’t you want parliament in the country?’
Senator Delwar Khan read the bill aloud. He said that according to the constitution every citizen of Pakistan has the right to vote. Apart from this, the Election Commission of Pakistan is obliged to conduct the next elections with the participation of all parties.
The Upper House of Parliament in Pakistan has 100 members. However, only 14 legislators were present when the resolution was passed.
