Many UN staff have been killed in an attack by Israeli forces in Gaza, the agency said. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has also claimed that hundreds of workers have been killed in the offensive that has been going on for more than a month.
This information was confirmed in a statement by the company in an announcement on Friday (November 10) local time.
Some of the victims were standing in line to buy bread at the bakery, the statement said. At that time they lost their lives in the Israeli attack. In addition, the rest were buried under their houses and killed by Israeli air strikes along with their families.
According to UNRWA director Philip Lazzarini, their workers who were killed include doctors, nurses, teachers, parents and support staff.
In this regard, Volker Turk, the chief human rights officer of the United Nations in Amman, the capital of Jordan, said that the killing of UN workers in Gaza is unprecedented, offensive and extremely heartbreaking.
Meanwhile, Martin Griffiths, the chief humanitarian officer of the organization, commented on the death of many UN staff as sad news.
Note that according to international law, UN personnel involved in rescue and relief operations cannot be attacked under any circumstances, including war. Israel has admitted to attacking more than 15,000 places in Gaza from October 7 to Friday.
More than 11,000 Palestinians were killed, most of them women and children. According to the Ministry of Health of Gaza, since the start of the attack on October 7, the Israeli forces have dropped 32 thousand tons of explosives in Gaza so far. According to preliminary estimates, the housing and infrastructure sectors each suffered a loss of $2 billion.
