At least two people were killed and 19 others were injured when a Mexican navy training ship crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, USA.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the information and said that the sailboat lost power before the collision on Saturday evening.
In a statement on social media X, he wrote – so far, 19 of the 277 people on board have been injured, of which two are in critical condition and two others have sadly died.
He previously said that there was no damage to the Brooklyn Bridge. However, the Mexican navy confirmed that the ship was damaged and that they were investigating the incident.
US officials said that there were 277 people on the ship, and that it was in New York on a courtesy visit.
Video footage from the scene shows the tall mast of the Cuauhtémoc hitting the bridge as the ship passed under the world-famous bridge on Saturday evening.
A section of the mast broke off and fell onto the ship’s deck, injuring several crew members standing on the mast, US media reported. The New York City Department of Emergency Management (NYCEM) responded to the incident.
