Germany plans to halve military aid to Ukraine from next year. The government has also approved a draft budget in this regard.
In the draft budget approved by the government on Wednesday, the aid has been reduced from 8.7 billion US dollars to about 4 billion US dollars.
In this regard, the Minister of Finance of the country, Christian Lindner, said that the G-7 alliance of rich countries plans to finance Ukraine from the interest obtained from the Russian assets seized on their soil. That’s why “military funding in Ukraine is secure for the foreseeable future.”
After the US, Germany is the largest source of military aid to Ukraine. Aid plays a major role in the country’s defense war against Russia.
Germany has announced plans to cut that aid at a time when future military aid to Ukraine from the United States has become increasingly uncertain.
With the presidential election in the United States on November 5 and if the Republican candidate Donald Trump wins, the military aid from the United States to Ukraine may be reduced or even stopped.
Germany plans to cut military aid to Ukraine but increases its own defense spending in 2025. It has decided to increase it by 1.3 billion euros over the last year to a total of more than 5 thousand 325 million euros. However, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius demanded a 6 billion euro budget increase.
Overall, Germany plans to meet the NATO alliance’s target of 2 percent of GDP spending on defense next year. In terms of money, which is about seven and a half billion euros.
The draft budget must now be passed by Parliament.
