Hurricane Beryl makes landfall in southeast Texas. More than 2.7 million people were left without power after the storm hit with heavy rain and gusty winds. At least two people lost their lives in the storm.More than 1,300 flights have been canceled from Houston’s largest airport.
When Beryl first hit Texas on Monday morning local time, it made landfall as a Category One hurricane. But since then it has gradually weakened to become a tropical storm.
Officials warned of damaging winds, up to 15 inches (38 cm) of rain and ‘life-threatening’ storm surges. In addition, more than 1,300 flights were canceled at Houston’s largest airport.
A 53-year-old man died Monday in Texas. He died after the wind blew down a power line and crashed into a tree at his home in Harris County. The tree fell on the house causing its roof to collapse. The same county also includes parts of Houston, where a 74-year-old woman was reported dead after a tree fell on her roof. The old woman’s granddaughter informed the police later.
Police have already begun rescue operations in the suburbs of Houston following Monday’s storm. According to the U.S. forecasting agency Aquaweather, this type of hurricane hitting Texas in July is somewhat rare.
