The bodies of two of the six people missing from the bridge collapse in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, have been recovered.
Their bodies were recovered on Wednesday (March 27) local time. Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes (35) and Dorian Ronial Castillo Cabrera (26) were both construction workers.
They were in a truck when the bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship. Maryland police confirmed the recovery of the bodies.
Meanwhile, investigators have recovered data recorders from the cargo ship hit by the bridge collapse in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. They hope that the reason why the ship collided with the bridge will be known from the recorder.
Initial speculation by US security agencies is that the ship may have lost control while leaving Baltimore’s harbor. What is known so far is that the Singapore-flagged cargo ship lost power before it hit the Daly Bridge. Even the engine had no power.
Repeated alarm sounds to solve the problem. The crew desperately tried to restore power to the ship. But all their efforts failed. Dali had an emergency generator though. But the generator could not restore the power of the engines.
Last Tuesday (March 26) night, the Singapore cargo ship Dali collided with the bridge while traveling from Baltimore, one of the American ports, to Sri Lanka. A part of the bridge collapsed. Two people were rescued alive the next day.
Meanwhile, Maryland Governor Wes Murry said, due to the intelligence of the ship’s crew, it was possible to prevent many deaths.
He said that the Indian sailors in charge of the cargo ship gave an early warning that a mechanical problem had been observed. There were also fears that the ship might lose control and hit the bridge. After receiving this warning, the road leading to the bridge was closed from both sides by the police. Otherwise, the damage could have been greater.
The Maryland governor said the true heroes are the sailors and crew in charge of the ship. They have saved many lives.
The accident happened after the 948-foot-long giant ship Dali left Baltimore for Sri Lanka. However, the ship’s sailors and crew are all safe.
