India has planned to build a fence to secure the 1,610 km long border with Myanmar. The construction of the fence will take a decade to complete.
The construction of the fence will cost about 3.7 billion dollars.
India plans to spend about $3.7 billion (over Rs. 30,700 crore) on fencing its 1,610-km (1,000-mile) border with Myanmar. This project will be implemented in the next 10 years.
Earlier this month, a government committee approved the cost of the fence. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet will give the final approval. Myanmar has so far not commented on India’s fencing plan.
Earlier this year, Delhi will withdraw from its decades-old visa-free travel policy with Myanmar. At the same time, the construction of a fence on the border of the belligerent neighbor was announced. Explaining the reason for this, the Government of India said that they have taken this decision in the interest of the safety and national security of their citizens living in the border areas and to protect the geological infrastructure of the northeastern region.
Earlier this month, a committee of the New Delhi government approved the cost of constructing the border fence. Now it needs the approval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Union Cabinet.
The Indian Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Home Affairs, Finance, External Affairs and Information and Broadcasting were contacted. But no response was received from any of them.
In February 2021, the country’s military seized power in Myanmar after overthrowing the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi through a coup. Since then, Myanmar troops have been fighting with various regional separatist and rebel groups in different states of the country. Rebels have also captured several areas and towns in the past few months of fighting.
