A farmer was killed in a clash with the police during the ‘Delhi Chal’ protest in India. The incident took place on Wednesday evening at Khanauri border in Haryana.
Due to this incident, the farmers’ union announced the suspension of the road march for two days. However, Haryana Police denied the death.
Farmers’ union All India Krishak Sabha (AIKS) alleged that Shubo Karan Singh (23) lost his life in the police operation. They claimed that the incident took place on the Khanauri border in Haryana on Wednesday evening.
However, they will continue their protest sitting at the border even if the journey towards Delhi is suspended for two days.
When the injured Shubo Karan Singh was taken to a hospital in Patiala, a doctor said that he had sustained a bullet injury. His body is awaiting post-mortem.
Patiala Rajendra Hospital Senior Medical Officer Dr. Rekhi said, ‘Three patients have come here from Khanauri. One of them died. The condition of the other two is stable. They are believed to have received bullet injuries. But it is still not certain.
Dr. Medical Officer. Rekhi also said, ‘The victim had a bullet wound on his head. But without post-mortem it is not possible to know the size of the bullet and other details,” he added.
The farmers said that when they tried to cross the barricade on the border, the Haryana police fired tear gas shells at them. After negotiations with the government failed, the farmers’ unions decided to resume the road march from Wednesday. At the end of the fourth round of negotiations, the two sides could not agree.
Haryana Police denied the death. In a post published on X, the police said, ‘According to the information we have, no farmer has died today. It’s just a rumour. However, two policemen and a protester were injured on the Data Singh-Khanori border and are undergoing treatment.
On the other hand, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann confirmed the death. He said, “After I heard about this incident and after watching the video, it gave me goosebumps.” I am very sorry.’
Reaction to Shubo Karan Singh’s death has been the release of angry statements by two farmers’ unions. Both organizations blamed the police and the central government for the incident.
Shubo Karan Singh was killed “as a result of police action,” the statement said. The killings revealed the true nature of the violence of the Modi government, which claims to be ‘farmer-friendly’.
“The Manohar Lal Khattar-led BJP government in Haryana is treating the protesting farmers—who are marching towards Delhi—as an enemy army and conducting a war-like campaign against them,” the statement concluded.
“The prime minister and his executive agencies have failed to comply with the terms of the agreement signed with SKM on December 9, 2021, and are solely responsible for the ongoing crisis and damage,” the United Farmers’ Movement (SKM) statement said.
Shubo Karan Singh is a resident of Bhatinda, Punjab, India. Farmer leader Kaka Singh Kotra said his father’s name was Charanjit Singh and he lived in a good village. This young farmer had two acres of land. He lost his mother at a young age and was raised by his grandmother.
