A New Zealand female Member of Parliament (MP) has resigned after allegations of plagiarism. The police are investigating multiple allegations of theft against the member of parliament. He resigned when a video of a bag theft from a store went viral.
The name of that member of Parliament is Golriz Ghahraman. He was elected Member of Parliament from the Green Party of New Zealand in 2017.
He was accused of stealing three different products from two clothing stores. The theft happened once in Auckland and the other time in Wellington.
Recently, the CCTV footage of the theft went viral. In the video, Golridge is seen stealing a designer bag from a boutique shop in Auckland. And he announced his resignation on Tuesday after the incident was revealed.
Golridge is a former UN human rights lawyer. He was born in Iran. He moved to New Zealand with his family as a child. Later his family got shelter as refugees in the country. Then they got citizenship. Golridge is the first MP in New Zealand’s history to be a refugee.
In a statement, Golridge, a 42-year member of Parliament, said, “People never expect such behavior from an elected representative.” I let a lot of people down, sorry for that.”
Golridge claimed, “He acted because of the pressure of work, which does not reflect his character.”
In response to his resignation, Green Party leader James Shaw said, “Since being elected as an MP, Golridge Ghahraman has been subjected to frequent sexual assaults, physical assaults, death threats.”
“It is true that Ghahraman has resigned, but it is also clear that he is suffering from mental anguish,” said Marama Davidson, another party leader.
