The country’s government is considering reducing the number of international students living in Canada as a result of the housing crisis. In an interview with the local television channel CTV, the country’s immigration minister, Mark Miller, said so.
The Canadian government relies heavily on immigration to keep its economy afloat and to care for its aging population.
Annual immigration has increased substantially since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took office. Canadians blame the country’s housing crisis on the influx of immigrants and international students and the halt in new home construction due to inflation.
Miller told CTV that the Canadian government is considering limiting access to international students in the first and second half of this year. The number of international students coming to Canada is increasing.
However, Miller did not say anything about how many international students will be covered by the government’s decision.
According to the Canadian government, there are currently about 800,000 international students in Canada on active visas.
Canada is one of the most popular destinations for those interested in higher education due to easy availability of work permits.
The Canadian government first considered limiting the number of international students last August, but the country’s housing minister, Sean Fraser, said at the time that the government had not made a decision.
Miller said to discuss the matter with the provincial government.
After eight years in power, Trudeau’s Liberal Party’s popular support has plummeted, and the popularity of the opposition Conservative Party, led by Pierre Polivert, is slowly rising.
Polivar has been critical of Trudeau’s party for not addressing the housing issue.
