Denmark bans burning of Holy Quran The law was passed by the country’s parliament on Thursday. The country has taken this step in the context of anger from Muslim countries.
After the passing of this law, it will be considered a crime if anyone burns the Holy Quran. And the offender must serve a maximum sentence of two years. Fines will also be imposed.
The law was voted on in Denmark’s parliament before it was passed. 94 MPs voted in favor of the legislation in a hotly contested vote. On the other hand, 77 voted against the law.
In an immediate reaction after the law was passed, former minister Inger Stoiberg said the law would take away freedom of expression.
Growing protests
Denmark and Sweden experienced a series of public protests this year in which anti-Islam activists burned or otherwise damaged copies of the Quran, sparking tensions with Muslims and triggering demands that the governments ban the practice.
Hundreds of protesters tried to march to the Danish embassy in Baghdad‘s fortified Green Zone in late July after a call by influential Shia religious and political leader Moqtada al-Sadr.
