How earthquake alerts work on phones
With earthquake alerts turned on, you’ll be notified when an earthquake is detected near where you are. The alert will state the approximate magnitude of the earthquake and the distance of the earthquake from your location. Warning messages are sent before, during or after an earthquake begins.
According to the feature, the mobile phone uses the user’s location to send estimated information about nearby earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and higher.
Keep in mind, there may be slight errors in earthquake magnitude and tremor intensity data.
