Israel canceled its delegation’s scheduled visit to the White House this week after the UN Security Council passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian independence group Hamas.
The United States abstained from voting on Monday’s resolution at the UN Security Council. And that’s what Israel is stuck with.
Immediately after the resolution was passed, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the US of a clear retreat from its previous position.
In a statement, Netanyahu said, “The United States today withdrew from its policy at the United Nations.” Unfortunately they did not veto the new proposal. The resolution calls for a cease-fire not conditional on the release of hostages. It is clear that they have withdrawn from the position of the United States in the Security Council since the beginning of the war in Gaza.
Meanwhile, the US said it was “deeply disappointed” by Israel’s decision to cancel the delegation’s visit. However, he said, even if this visit is cancelled, there will be a separate visit by Israel’s defense minister.
