World first robotic heart transplant in Saudi Arabia. This transplant was completed in the body of a 16-year-old boy suffering from heart disease at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC) of the country. Saudi cardiac surgeon Dr. Feras Khalil led the two-and-a-half-hour surgery.
The heart was transplanted without any incision in the patient’s chest. The surgery has been meticulously planned for the past few weeks.
As stated, KFSHRC is a specialized hospital and training center for robotic surgery in organ transplantation. In a statement, authorities said a new horizon has opened up in robotic heart surgery by replacing hearts through minimal incisions. With this procedure, the patient recovers faster and the potential complications are significantly reduced compared to open-heart surgery.
Earlier last year also at KFSHRC, a 66-year-old man suffering from non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma successfully underwent the world’s first fully robotic liver transplant. Not only that, four more such transplants were completed later. All patients who underwent surgery were citizens of Saudi Arabia.
At that time, the executive director of KFSHRC’s organ transplant center in Al-Arabia. This specialized hospital has been working for four decades to put Saudi Arabia on the world map for organ transplantation, said Dieter Broering.
He also said, robotic transplant promises a new era in healthcare. This is redefining organ transplantation with precision and minimal incisions.
