1 billion people in the world waste food every day. A fifth of this wasted food comes from the household, restaurant, food service and retail sectors. But on the contrary, every day about 800 million people are starving.
In 2023, the world wasted more than 1 billion metric tons of food. About a third of this is lost during the food production process. In addition, about 13 percent of food is lost during the time it reaches from the farm to the consumption of food. Households wasted more than 600 million metric tons of food in 2022. Which is about 60 percent of the total wastage. Besides, the food service sector is responsible for about 28 percent of the waste and the retail sector for 12 percent of the waste. The average person wastes 79 kilograms of food every year.
Food waste is not just a developed world phenomenon. In high- and middle-income countries, 7 kilograms of food is wasted per person per year.
