A total of 99 journalists were killed worldwide in 2023. 72 of them are Palestinians. They were killed while reporting on Israel’s war in Gaza. About 75 percent of journalists killed worldwide are Palestinian victims.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) says that such killings are a serious threat to the media in the last decade.
CPJ said in its annual report released on Thursday that the number of journalists killed worldwide each year would be much lower if not for the ongoing war in Gaza.
How many journalists are killed in a country throughout the year. More than that were killed in the first three months of the Gaza-Israel war. Last December, the organization said, 77 journalists were killed while working in Gaza. Among them, 72 Palestinians, three Lebanese and two Israelis.
CPJ president Jody Ginsburg from New York told Al Jazeera that the war on journalists was unprecedented. He said, what is important to remember about this war is; Only the journalists there are able to report what happened in Gaza. The Israeli army did not allow international journalists to enter.
The CPJ president also said, “We are completely dependent on Palestinian journalists to report on the Gaza war.” Those who are risking their lives to tell us this story.
The New York-based organization said on February 7 that the number of journalists killed in the Gaza war has risen to 85.
The CPJ is investigating whether a dozen journalists killed earlier in Gaza were deliberately killed by Israeli soldiers, a war crime.
