The fire is initially believed to have started from the decoration of a new store.
A terrible fire has occurred in one of the largest markets in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A large part of the Jeddah International Market has been burnt to ashes. At least two members of the fire service died while fighting the fire.
More than 20 units of the fire service started working to control the rapidly spreading fire. After about 12 hours, the fire was brought under control. But before that, a large number of stalls and shops were burnt down.
Arab News reported that there was no one in the market when the fire broke out in the early hours of the morning. Moammar Al-Awidi, owner of a cafe and electronics store, said he received the shocking news from one of his employees at 8am. In his words, “I ran but could not enter the market because the entire area was covered in smoke. Although no one was injured in the incident, the market was severely damaged.”
Eyewitnesses said that the fire was initially believed to have started from the decoration of a new shop near Gate No. 4. Eyewitness Omar Ba-Jamal said: “The fire spread very quickly. We were all watching, but we couldn’t take any action as there were restaurants with kitchens nearby.”
