Floods, landslides and heavy rains have killed at least 23 people in Papua New Guinea’s highlands, damaging homes and washing away roads.
Local time Monday (March 18), Acting Director of the country’s National Disaster Center, Lucette Mann, said that a mother and child were killed in several communities due to bad weather.
Mann said 23 people were buried under the ground in three separate landslides in different parts of Simbu province. We are still experiencing heavy rains, landslides. Flooding of the river has caused extensive damage in the highlands.
Paharia area has suffered a lot of damage due to continued inclement weather. The province consists of six districts and has a population of about 376,000. The province is also known as Simbu.
The huge sea waves caused by this natural disaster hit the coastal areas and the people there are also in harm’s way. The government has allocated relief aid to deal with this disaster.
According to the 2022 Global Risk Index, Papua New Guinea is ranked the 16th most vulnerable country in the world to climate change and natural disasters.
