Suddenly, a Russian fleet in Chittagong port. This is the first time in the last 50 years that a Russian warship is in the port of Bangladesh. On Sunday (12 November), the Russian Embassy in Dhaka gave this information in a message.
The Pacific Fleet consists of two submarine destroyers, Admiral Tributs and Admiral Panteleev. There is also a tanker named Pechenga in this fleet.
According to the Russian Embassy, the Russian Pacific Fleet Squadron is visiting Chittagong Port, which is a huge milestone for Russia-Bangladesh relations. It was 50 years ago that a naval ship of the Soviet Union (now Russia) last visited the port of Bangladesh.
The Russian embassy also said that 5 decades ago, the Russian fleet came mainly to protect a newly independent country from a humanitarian disaster. Many mines were laid in the port during the War of Independence. Because of this, many ships were sunk. At that time, Bangladesh government appealed to many countries for help in solving this mine problem.
Some countries responded to that request. But they demanded a lot of money in return; Which was not in Bangladesh. At the time, the Soviet Union (now Russia) was the only country that agreed to provide humanitarian aid. A mine clearing operation was then launched to resolve the problem.
More than 800 sailors of the Soviet Navy worked tirelessly for 26 months to remove the mines of Chittagong port; Which started in April 1972 and lasted till June 1974. A Russian diver died in that operation. But in the end the Soviet Navy achieved their goal and the port of Chittagong opened the way for ships from all over the world.
It should be noted that in March 1972, the delegation of the Soviet Navy, led by Vice Admiral Sergey Zuenko, started a special task force of 1,000 sailors to remove mines. 24 ships of the country participated in that operation.
